The AI can sometimes go off the rails, but it also knows how to be useful, like Daisy. Presented last week by the British operator O2, this bot imitates the voice and reactions of a talkative grandmother to thwart telephone scammers. Objective: to keep on the line as long as possible the scammers who call to extract money or information from their victims by pretending to be a bank, technical support or other. “While they’re busy talking to me, they can’t scam you, and let’s face it, I have all the time in the world,” Daisy, the lifelike AI granny, explains in an introductory video.
“Hello scammers, I’m your worst nightmare.” This is how she presents herself, showing how she manages to ruin the lives of telephone scammers: she makes them repeat their instructions, does not understand their instructions or explains that she is trying to have “just a little conversation”.
Combining multiple AI models to autonomously listen and respond to scam calls in real time, Daisy managed to keep many scammers on the line for 40 minutes straight, the operator claims. This says it responds to a study according to which seven in 10 Britons want to defend themselves against telephone scammers, but more than half do not want to waste their time trapping them, by wasting their time, for example.
