Create your lightweight Windows 11 24H2 ISO with tiny11 | PC – Mac – Linux

Who has never dreamed of a Windows 11 stripped of everything that is useless? An operating system that's light as a feather, fast as lightning and totally dedicated to your needs? Well, that’s exactly what the project offers. tiny11with its new Windows 11 version 24H2 compatible update.

Imagine that thanks to this PowerShell script, you can create your own ultra-lite version of Windows 11, approximately 3 Go on your hard drive. we are therefore very far from the awful 20 GB of Windows in the normal version…

The creator of the project, NTDEVhas just updated its tool to support the latest version of Windows 11 released on October 1, 2024 and you will love it. With the wave of a magic wand, you will be able to remove all those pre-installed applications that you never use: goodbye Clipchamp, News, Weather, Xbox and company!

Tiny11 comes in two very distinct versions. On the one hand, you have the tiny11 builder classic, perfect for daily use, especially on machines with modest configurations or not officially supported by Windows 11. And on the other, the tiny11 corean even more minimalist version designed for rapid development and testing. The latter takes the slimming treatment to the extreme by even removing the Windows Component Store (WinSxS) and Windows Defender.

To get your hands on this tool, head to GitHub where the entire project is open source. The installation procedure is disconcertingly simple:

  1. Download the official Windows 11 ISO from the Microsoft website
  2. Mount the ISO image in Windows Explorer
  3. Get the tiny11 script on GitHub
  4. Run it following the on-screen instructions

Little tip for beginners: don't forget to authorize the execution of PowerShell scripts with the command:

Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted

But what exactly does tiny11 remove from your Windows?

Here is a non-exhaustive list of deleted items:

  • Pre-installed Microsoft applications (Mail, Calendar, etc.)
  • The Edge browser (but don't worry, you can always install your favorite browser)
  • OneDrive
  • Unnecessary multimedia components
  • Rarely used support tools

If you opt for the version coreare added to this list:

  • The Windows Component Store (WinSxS)
  • Windows Defender (which can be reactivated if necessary)
  • Windows Update
  • And Windows Recovery Environment

Important: As I told you, the core version is really not intended for daily use. Without WinSxS, it's impossible to install updates or add features so it's more intended to provide a testing environment for developers or for very specific use cases.

Besides, did you know that some enthusiasts use it for rather original experiences? For example, tiny11 core made it possible to run Windows 11 on an iPhone 15 Pro! Well, it wasn't very usable, but it shows the possibilities offered by such a stripped down version of the system.

For the classic version of tiny11, you therefore retain the possibility of installing applications via winget after a small update from the Microsoft Store. For example, if you miss Edge, a simple command is enough:

winget install edge

Small flaws to note though: Outlook and Dev Home sometimes have a tendency to reappear as if by magic, and ARM64 users might see a few minor error messages during installation.

For the more cautious among you who are still hesitant: rest assured, the project is entirely open source and only uses official Microsoft tools like DISM. The only external executable is oscdimg.exe, provided in the Windows ADK, needed to create bootable ISO images.

If this little adventure tempts you, I strongly encourage you to test tiny11. Whether to give new life to an old computer, to create an ultra-light development environment, or simply out of curiosity, it is an enriching experience that will allow you to better understand the workings of Windows.

Of course, don't forget to back up your data before any experimentation. I won't be responsible if you lose everything!
