Mercedes-AMG announces a high-performance electric SUV — 98.5 Montreal

After months of speculation, Mercedes-AMG confirms that it is developing its very first 100% electric high-performance SUV, entirely designed on its AMG.EA architecture. Unlike AMG models based on existing Mercedes products, this SUV will be an exclusive creation of the brand, without compromise on design and engineering.

The latter, nicknamed “Born in Affalterbach” by Mercedes-AMG, will mark a first for the division, which has never before developed an SUV from scratch. The utility will be tested this winter and aims to compete directly with future electric models from Porsche and Lamborghini, strong competitors in the high-performance vehicle segment.

A 100% AMG design and a dedicated platform
With over 25 years of experience in crafting performance SUVs, Mercedes-AMG has already given us the ML 55 AMG. The new vehicle, however, goes much further by using the AMG.EA architecture, already planned to replace the AMG GT Coupé. It will thus become the second vehicle in this range of purely electric models.

The philosophy behind this SUV is clear: “AMG first, electric second”. Mercedes-AMG wishes to preserve the soul of the AMG letters, by guaranteeing sensations and power specific to its emblematic models with thermal engines, while adapting them to electric propulsion.

Technology inspired by the Vision One-Eleven and EQXX concepts

Although Mercedes-AMG has not revealed technical details, its SUV could incorporate key innovations such as YASA axial flow motors, revealed with the Vision One-Eleven concept in 2023, as well as an 800-volt electrical architecture . The future monster will also run AMG.OS, a high-performance version of Mercedes-Benz’s future MB.OS operating system.

The YASA engines can produce up to 480 horsepower each, which raises the prospect of a three- or four-motor configuration, for output that could exceed 1,000 horsepower. Additionally, Mercedes-AMG could introduce a bespoke battery, inspired by the cylindrical cells and advanced chemistry revealed with the 2022 Vision EQXX concept.

With this new SUV, Mercedes-AMG seeks to push the boundaries of electric performance by offering its customers an experience that combines cutting-edge technology and AMG DNA.
