SMS: everything that changes for users

Since the start of the school year, the way of communicating by SMS has evolved and other changes are to come. We therefore suggest that you take stock of everything that is changing or will change.

Deployed at the beginning of the 2020s, RCS, for Rich Communication Services, made it possible to evolve SMS and MMS exchanges. On Android, communications have been enriched, in particular thanks to Google Messages and a connection to the Internet network, either via Wi-Fi or via mobile data. This has transformed the way we send “text messages”, while avoiding outright replacement by other instant messaging applications, including WhatsApp. In recent weeks, the Mountain View firm has evolved Google Messages. For reasons of convenience and habit, we all continue to talk about SMS even if the standard has changed.

Edit your messages after sending

A mistake? A word incorrectly corrected by the autographic corrector? Any clarification to add? A slip of the tongue? From now on, all users can modify their message sent in RCS. The only condition is to make the modification within 15 minutes of sending. Anecdotally, iPhone users are still waiting to take advantage of this feature. More details here.

End-to-end encryption

Like the most famous messaging applications, RCS will allow messages to be sent that will be end-to-end encrypted, regardless of the platform of use. You can read more details here.

Two options for sending photos

In order to offer a real compromise between the quality of the photos sent and the quantity of data to be used for this, Google is working on an option which will offer choice. Again, this functionality is inspired by WhatsApp. Concretely, users will be able to send a photo in HD, a mode optimized for conversation, or in HD+, a mode designed to preserve image quality.

In the first case, the quality will be reduced in favor of a faster and less data-intensive transfer. In the second case, the photo will not be compressed to ensure transmission without loss of quality. The downside is that this last option will consume more mobile data (or Internet data) and will require a longer time for the transfer. All the details can be discovered in our article.

Reinforced security measures

True scourges of modern times, scams continue to multiply. Many use text messages. The problem is serious and Google is working on five major security measures. Thus, fake messages concerning deliveries or job searches will be placed in spam, as will messages from international senders outside of saved contacts. This should help combat phishing attempts.

Likewise, suspicious links will trigger smart warnings to increase user distrust. Sensitive content will also be reviewed. An option will allow you to be warned of the sensitive nature of content when it is received. Images containing nudity will be blurred before viewing. Finally, users will have a tool to check the public key of an interlocutor to ensure that they are not communicating with a usurper. All details are mentioned here.

iPhone: reactions with emojis well integrated

Lately, since the deployment of iOS 18.1, people who own an iPhone have had a pleasant surprise. Emoji-based reactions sent via an Android smartphone are now displayed correctly in RCS conversations on the Apple device. There is no longer a lag like before, when the emoji was displayed in a separate bubble in the conversation on the Cupertino company’s machine side.
