The new MacBook Pros recently launched by Apple don’t just change engines. The screen has also changed, for the better… even if the results are more difficult to perceive.
The new ones MacBook Pro were definitely born under a lucky star. Laptops benefit from the power of the M4 chip, available for the occasion in M4 Pro and M4 Max. Apple has also added an additional Thunderbolt 4 port in the entry-level model, and offers a nano-texture option to reduce reflections. And that’s not all.

Quantum dot to the rescue
Screen analyst Ross Young says computer screens have a movie built into them quantum dot (QD), a technology improving the display of colors and the fluidity of movements. The technical sheet for the new machines makes no mention of it.
Apple therefore replaced the previous technology – a KSF (Potassium Fluorosilicate) red phosphor film – which was already very effective in producing precise colors. The new film, a thin layer integrated into the structure of the screen, is a QD model composed of semiconductor nanostructures capable of emitting very precise colors, when excited by light.
The color gamut is just as wide as with KSF film, it can even be superior. Quantum dots also accelerate color transitions with a faster response rate. If Apple had not yet switched to QD, this can be explained according to Young by the fact that the first generations of this technology were not sufficiently efficient in terms of energy efficiency. In other words, they consumed too much, which is a problem for a laptop.
And then these first generations carried cadmium (Cd), a toxic heavy metal, which is banned in many countries because of its harmful effects on the environment and on health. In 2015, the manufacturer explained its refusal to use QD screens precisely for this reason.
