DeepL doesn’t have as many Google Translate users. But for a while now, it has been claiming better quality translations than the Mountain View firm’s tool. And in July, it announced a new generation of large language model that would outperform the models from Google Translate, GPT-4 and Microsoft. In fact, translations made with Google Translate would require twice as many corrections, compared to those generated by DeepL. And those of GPT-4 would require three times more corrections. And this week, the German startup is taking a new step by offering a new real-time translation service.
The European startup launches its instant translation service
In a blog post, the startup presents its new product called DeepL Voice, which is an instant translator for spoken conversations and video conferences. “DeepL Voice brings you real-time translation solutions that have been carefully developed using DeepL’s extensive expertise in language translations and artificial intelligence models, applied and optimized for real-time applications”indicates the company.
However, unlike DeepL’s text translation, real-time translation targets businesses and not the general public. Moreover, the prices of this new service are not revealed on the startup’s website. But in any case, by announcing its instant translation service, DeepL is taking another important step. “DeepL is renowned for its ability to translate texts. 50% of Fortune 500 companies can attest to our mastery in this area. But real-time voice translation is a completely different story. You have to deal with incomplete typing, pronunciation issues, latency, and more, which can lead to inaccurate translations and even more confusion in meetings.”explains the startup.
A startup valued at $2 billion
In any case, DeepL is today one of the most promising European startups in the field of artificial intelligence. And its models specializing in translation interest many investors. In 2023, the company raised $100 million, bringing its valuation to $1 billion. And in May 2024, another raising of 300 million euros brought DeepL’s valuation to $2 billion.
