ChatGPT can answer your questions, analyze documents or even generate computer code. On the other hand, despite its high level of intelligence, the OpenAI chatbot is of no use to you if you want to reserve a restaurant table, buy an item online or buy a plane ticket. But the good news is that the creator of ChatGPT is already developing new technology that will make the chatbot more useful in daily life.
Operator, the new technology from OpenAI?
According to an article from Bloomberg, OpenAI is developing an “AI agent” called “Operator” which will be able to take control of the user's computer, in order to carry out actions for them. It would be possible, thanks to this functionality, to entrust tasks currently impossible for ChatGPT to AI, such as making an online reservation. Recently, OpenAI reportedly announced to its employees that the goal is to launch a preview version in January, and offer the technology to developers.
But for the moment, the information has not been confirmed by OpenAI and, therefore, caution is still required. In any case, such technology would allow ChatGPT to eliminate its current limitations, and to be more competitive with competing products, such as Google's Gemini chatbot. As a reminder, Gemini has an extension system that allows it to connect to other Google products, including Google Home. Thanks to the Google Home extension, Gemini is already able to control certain connected objects in the home.
The next step in the AI race
AI agents, capable of controlling the user's computer to carry out tasks in the real world, could be the next major evolution in generative artificial intelligence. In October, Microsoft announced a feature that allows businesses to create AI agents. “Each organization will have a constellation of agents – ranging from a simple prompt and response system to full autonomy. They will work on behalf of an individual, team or function to execute and orchestrate business processes”explained the Redmond firm.
Anthropic, one of OpenAI's main competitors, also announced a feature called “computer use”. “[…] Each organization will have a constellation of agents – ranging from a simple prompt and response system to full autonomy. They will work on behalf of an individual, team or function to execute and orchestrate business processes,” said this startup, which offers this functionality via its APIs for developers.
Google would also develop an AI agent for Chrome
And according to a recent rumor, Google is also working on a similar technology called “Jarvis”. This agent could be integrated into the Chrome browser in order to perform actions for the user. In addition, Jarvis should be a consumer-targeted product, making it easier for them to perform everyday tasks, such as ordering online or making reservations. But for the moment, Google has not yet formalized this project.
Otherwise, the creator of the Arc browser could also create a surprise with the new product he is developing.
- ChatGPT has many skills, but this one can't order online or book a hotel room

- OpenAI plans to release a preview version of this technology in January
- Other companies are already working on similar projects
