GOG Preservation Program Announced: Preserving Old Games for Current and Future PCs

GOG launched the GOG Preservation Program to make classic video games playable for the long term and thus preserve them for future generations. At launch, more than 100 titles have already been added to the program, including well-known classics such as Diablo + Hellfire, Fallout: New Vegas and Heroes of Might and Magic 3. These games receive the “Preserved by GOG” label and are continually updated to ensure their ability to run on modern and future PC systems. The goal of the program is to ensure full compatibility and access to all content, manuals and additional features of the games. GOG takes care of a kind of archive backup and also offers technical support and offline installation options so that users can use their games at any time. The program reflects GOG’s stated goal of protecting the timeless classics of the gaming world from technological obsolescence and keeping them accessible at all times.

Maciej Golebiewski, CEO of GOG, emphasized in a statement that the company views the preservation of digital cultural assets as an urgent task, especially given rapid technological developments. GOG’s preservation program aims to keep games complete and unchanged, even if technical standards and requirements change. In addition to well-known classics such as Myst, Theme Hospital and System Shock 2, the program will be expanded in the future to include other games that meet quality and compatibility requirements. The GOG Preservation Program is not only a contribution to the preservation of digital cultural assets, but also a service for fans and collectors who want to experience their games in the best available version and without technical restrictions.
