This LG Display screen that stretches from 12 to 18 inches

The technology, showcased at LG Science Park in Seoul via a prototype, shows a 12-inch screen that stretches up to 18 inches. The best part? The panel maintains its resolution of 100 pixels per inch with full RGB color display.

A first prototype was unveiled in 2022. This is an improvement since the maximum stretching rate has increased from 20% to 50%. LG Display has perfected its special silicone substrate used in contact lenses and developed a new wiring structure.

LG Display has also increased durability by using 40 micrometer micro-LEDs. The panel withstands more than 10,000 stretches while maintaining its image quality. Even in extreme temperature and shock conditions.

But what can such a screen be used for? The Korean company showed several situations, such as an automobile panel that deforms into a convex shape to be manipulated by hand. A screen was also presented integrated into firefighters' uniforms to receive information in real time. The technology, thin and light, adheres to irregular surfaces such as clothing or skin. The promise of use in fashion, connected objects and mobility.

A national project in which LG Display participates

LG Display's achievement is part of a national project launched in 2020. The Korean company is leading R&D in collaboration with 19 South Korean research and industrial institutes. The technology is part of a program by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to develop next-generation display technologies.

Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, highlights the company's commitment to “continue to build a sustainable display ecosystem for the future through close cooperation between South Korean industry, academia and research stakeholders.”
