Microsoft will soon remove these two pre-installed applications from your PCs

Microsoft has just announced a major decision regarding Windows 11: the Mail and Calendar applications integrated into the operating system will stop working from December 31, 2024.

Microsoft has been pushing its users towards the new version of Outlook for Windows 11 for several months, a unified web application which was officially launched last August. This rushed transition is not trivial: after the deadline of December 31, 2024users who have not migrated to the new application “ will no longer be able to send or receive emails via Windows Mail and Calendar », Warns Microsoft.

This decision is part of a broader strategy to modernize Microsoft’s messaging tools. The new web-based version of Outlook is intended to eventually also replace the full desktop version of Outlook. However, businesses will benefit from 12 months’ notice before any forced migration.

Mail and Calendar will soon leave Windows 11

For current users, several options are available. It is possible to temporarily deactivate “New Outlook” in the application settings, which will allow you to continue viewing emails in read-only mode after December 31. Microsoft is also working on offline viewing functionality, an essential feature for many users.

Data stored locally in Mail and Calendar can be exported to the new Outlook application or to other third-party applications thanks to a dedicated export function. This feature will allow users to not lose any information during the transition.

It should be noted that existing installations of classic Outlook, whether perpetual or under a subscription license, will continue to be supported at least until 2029. This long transition period demonstrates Microsoft’s desire to ensure a smooth migration for all of its users.

Users who want to continue using old apps until the last minute can ignore migration notifications by clicking “Later“, but these reminders will reappear regularly until the deadline of December 31, 2024.
