Apple's new anti-lost luggage weapon

A lost suitcase is the start of a ruined vacation. Apple offers an innovative solution with iOS 18.2, to transform AirTags into real luggage detectives.

Personally, I always put an AirTag in my suitcases. This is reassuring and gives me useful information. For example, during my last trip, my suitcase was forgotten and stuck in CDG… for three days I was able to follow its movement. It's reassuring.

Apple is going to roll out an update for its AirTags that could transform the search for lost luggage. With iOS 18.2, the Californian giant introduces a feature allowing you to share the location of AirTags with third parties, notably airlines.

A timely innovation

Available at around €30, the AirTag already allows you to locate objects via Apple's “Locate” application, provided that an Apple device passes nearby.

The new update goes further by allowing this location data to be shared with authorized third parties. This sharing is limited to seven days and stops automatically as soon as the AirTag finds its owner.

The process is simple: users can generate a link in the “Find My” app on iPhone, iPad or Mac, which allows them to view the AirTag's location on a map via a web browser. To ensure security, access to this data requires signing in with an Apple account.

Apple's initiative does not remain a dead letter: 15 airlines, including Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Eurowings, United and Swiss International Air Lineshave already announced their participation in the program. Their customer services will be able to use these links to more efficiently locate lost luggage.

The iOS 18.2 update, currently in beta, will soon be available for all compatible iPhones (iPhone Xs and newer models).
