A change where none was needed

The only visible change that the Sony WH-1000XM5 benefits from is that of design and the evolution is radical to say the least. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean it was well thought out. While the WH-1000XM4 benefited from a foldable headband, this is not at all the case for the Sony WH-1000XM5 which thus loses ergonomics, only its earcups are now pivotable. You should therefore not expect it to take up no space in a bag. However, comfort is still essential with the padded headband and the earcups which perfectly encompass the ears for excellent sound isolation.

In addition to being a jewel of comfort, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is also a champion of autonomy. The Japanese manufacturer announces an endurance of 30 hours with active noise reduction, as for the WH-1000XM4. Without active noise reduction, we climb to 40 hours, which is a very good score which also keeps its promises as we were able to note in our test. Sony also indicates that it is possible to recover 3 hours of battery life with just 3 minutes of charging. For a full charge with USB-C cable, you must wait within 1h30.

Unrivaled active noise reduction!

Another major change for the Sony WH-1000XM5: a total of eight microphones for active noise reduction instead of four for its predecessor, knowing that the latter was also considered the best active noise reduction headphones at its time. The WH-1000XM5 also incorporates a dual processor noise reduction system which makes it more effective on mid and high frequencies, and therefore human voices. Finally, this headset offers ANC adapted to the wearer’s environment thanks to an atmospheric pressure sensor.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also brings a menu change in terms of audio architecture. Instead of the 40 mm transducers of the WH-1000XM4, we find 30 mm transducers but the WH-1000XM5 does not go down in range. These new transducers are now designed with carbon fiber composite materials and a neodymium magnet, making them more responsive despite their small size. In terms of rendering, this headset delivers more precise and more natural sound than its predecessor. On the Bluetooth side, the WH-1000XM5 can connect multipoint with SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs.
