More than Echoes of Wisdom where we play, for the first time, Princess Zelda, it is the return of the Mario and Luigi game series which was able to surprise the sphere of Nintendo enthusiasts. A reappearance which took place on November 7 with Mario and Luigi: the brotherly epic on Switch. We were able to test it and it's not the cruise fans dreamed of: our video test.
Mario and Luigi: the brotherly epic on another road
At the end of November 2023, Nintendo releases Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance. A memorable title that contrasts with the universe usually favored for Mario and company. The atmosphere is sordid, comical and magical at the same time while being assumed. 21 years later, Mario and Luigi: the brotherly epic somewhat ignores this identity specific to the series. We find the strong theme of electricity since Mario and Luigi must, despite themselves, help connect islands scattered across the continent of Connexia. However, the different islands fail to anchor themselves in memory. The same goes for the character design.
We find this lack of identity in the writing. If Mario and Luigi: The Brotherhood Epic keeps the comic side of the Mario RPGs, it is not combined with the particular atmosphere of the games in the saga. We feel, especially if we are a fan of the first titles, too much that Nintendo and Acquire wanted to do something for the general public so as not to leave anyone behind. But that's also why the title struggles to convince, with, in addition, a narrative campaign marked by length. More than 30 hours in a straight line! Lengths and redundancies that we discuss in more detail in the video test below.
Fights as gripping as ever, technique that squeaks
But there's not only fog on the horizon! The fights, also the spearhead of the first games, are still just as satisfying in the brotherly epic. We find the dynamic turn-based system where the player, in attack and defense, must press the right button at the right time to be effective. The variety in timings refreshes the clashes from time to time and the boss fights are still just as demanding. Combat holds, a major feature of the game, provide a welcome semblance of customization.
Like Grezzo (Echoes of Wisdom) or GoodFeel (Princess Peach: Showtime), Acquire has difficulty rendering a technical copy without flaws. It is even the latter which pulls down a title already presenting imperfections. Loading times are multiple, breaking an already uncontrolled rhythm. We witness regular drops in fluidity when it is not the rhythm of images per second that is of concern.
Available since November 7 on Nintendo Switch, Mario and Luigi: the brotherly epic is not the return so hoped for by fans of the saga. However, it remains an accessible game that can occupy many hours, but in small sessions, for those who have not yet tried it. More details in our test video above.
