The success of Meta’s smart glasses, manufactured in collaboration with the Ray-Ban brand, inspires Apple. According to renowned journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the Apple firm recently set up a group of employees, as part of an internal study called “Atlas”. Its task would be to evaluate the connected glasses currently available on the market with the aim of competing with augmented reality glasses that can connect to the iPhone, he reports.
The idea would be to launch a product that is more affordable and less bulky than the Apple Vision Pro virtual and augmented reality headset. They should recall the solution proposed by the company Xreal with its glasses serving as a screen when connected to a smartphone or a PC. Apple’s future smart glasses would be positioned as an accessory, like the AirPods headphones, rather than a standalone product. They would have the advantage of being a light and compact product, like the Meta Ray-Ban, since the processing of all the calculations would be delegated to the iPhone.
The Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, for its part, has come under criticism regarding its high price and bulk. Despite this mixed reception, the Californian tech giant seems determined to offer a second version equipped with a more efficient chip. It is expected to launch in 2025, while a more accessible version, currently referred to as Apple Vision Pro SE, could ultimately be delayed beyond 2027, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
