Over the years, the developers have refined their Pixelmator application before releasing Photomator currently available on macOS, iOS and iPadOS. While Apple threw in the towel on its Aperture software in 2015, Photomotor, sold for €60 on the Mac App Store without a subscription, is today considered the main alternative to Adobe Lightroom on Apple systems.
Photomator natively integrates with Apple Photo Library and iCloud sync. To make it as native as possible, the developers used Apple Metal, Core ML and Core Image technologies. The software supports over 750 RAW file formats. Concerning retouching, it manages layers, in particular with automatic selections (subject, sky, background). If all the tools or sliders can be adjusted manually, the Pixelmator team has added some AI elements, notably for the removal of unwanted objects, increasing the resolution or reducing noise and artifacts. compression.
Alongside Photomator, Pixelmator also develops the Pixelmator Pro software which targets Adobe Photoshop fans. If we find the image editing tools integrated into the first software, it is oriented more towards graphic manipulations. It remains relatively simple to use with a shorter learning curve than Adobe’s software. There is a wide range of non-destructive editing tools and of course support for layers with blending modes as well as painting tools with customizable brushes and support for graphics tablets. Pixelmator Pro also allows the creation of vector formats.
