Google Maps is full of new features: what’s changing

On his blogGoogle Maps has unveiled a series of new features. Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence, integrates with Google Maps to help you with your searches, while the functionality Immersive View for Routes aims to bring you more peace of mind during your journeys.

Moreover, Immersive View for Places is enriched and a feature suggests places to visit along your route. Waze users benefit from two new features.

Immersive View for Routes, for safer driving

The Immersive View tool has been designed to provide greater safety and useful information to drivers. Immersive View is thus able to simulate traffic forecasts using AI and historical data. On the navigation screen, several pieces of information are accessible, such as the presence of cycle paths, pedestrian crossings, road signs or even delicate maneuvers and turns that you could make during your journey. Additionally, Immersive View shows nearby parking lots and reminds you to save your parking spot.

For those who don’t always know which lane to take on a road, Immersive View clearly indicates which lane to take. All the driver has to do is follow the blue line located on the road markings (see example above).

Finally, note that it is possible to report weather disturbances during your travels, such as a flooded or unplowed road, an object on the road or even low visibility.

Immersive View for Routes is already available.

Explore for Trips et Updated Arrivals Experience

Explore for Trips aims to help you discover places during your travels. For example, you need to go to a specific location, but you want to visit places during your trip. By tapping the “add stops” tab, Google Maps offers you a list of landmarks, places to visit, and dining options that are on your route. Note also the appearance of the Updated Arrivals Experience tool whose objective is to “provide you with useful information to get from your car to your final destination”.

These two features are already accessible.

Immersive View for Places s’enrichit

Immersive View for Places will expand to 150 cities by the end of 2024, including Brussels, Kyoto and Frankfurt, and offer new places to visit online such as universities. You will be able to have a complete overview of a place, while being informed of the weather in real time and the level of attendance.

In addition, Immersive View for Places will now show you where it is possible to park near the location of your interest and will alert you to the presence of complex turns on the route.

Gemini will help you with your searches on Google Maps

Gemini, Google’s AI, will soon integrate with Google Maps to help you with your searches. You can ask him for advice, information or things to do in the area. For example, if you ask Gemini: “activities to do this evening with friends”, Google’s artificial intelligence will provide you with a list of bars and restaurants. Additionally, Gemini will be able to summarize reviews about a place, which is particularly handy if you don’t have time.

This feature will be rolled out this week in the United States on iOS and Android. As for Europe, we do not yet have a precise date.

Waze is enriched with two new features

Finally, let’s note two new features that concern Waze. The Conversational Reporting feature allows you to report traffic issues to Gemini. To do this, for example, it is enough to say: “There is a traffic jam a little further down the road”. If necessary, Gemini will ask you a few questions in order to present a comprehensive report to other drivers.

The School Zones feature allows you to report school zones. Drivers traveling in these areas will then receive a notification urging them to drive carefully.
