Apple and Samsung reportedly in the running to acquire Intel

According to an Apple rumor, Samsung and Qualcomm are in the running to acquire Intel, the semiconductor giant. Each of these companies has an Arm license, giving them strategic potential to leverage or diversify their chip portfolios.

The information relayed by Moore’s Law is Dead should be taken with a pinch of salt. Such an acquisition would allow Apple, which designs its own chips for its devices, including Macs, to strengthen its semiconductor production capabilities. For its part, Samsung could become a parent company abroad of an American company like Intel. This is a possibility if we consider examples such as the acquisition of Boston Dynamics by Hyundai Motors, or the acquisition of Westinghouse Nuclear by the Japanese Toshiba, before moving on to the Canadian Bookfield Partners. Finally Qualcomm could be tempted by Intel’s x86 intellectual property, especially since its relations with Arm are complex.

Intel is a target due to difficulties

The current situation of Intel, which remains a major player in the PC and server processor segments, is marked by a decline in its stock market valuation and technological challenges. For example, its recent investments, including $10 billion in the development of GPUs for various applications, have so far had mixed results. The “Ponte Vecchio” project and its Xe-HP AI GPUs did not meet expectations, particularly in terms of performance. Additionally, Intel Foundry’s declining competitiveness and abandonment of its Core Ultra “Arrow Lake” processor logic tiles on its own manufacturing nodes have weakened the company’s position in an increasingly competitive market. These elements could explain why the giant can be considered an acquisition target for large technology companies.
