Six airports in Thailand adopt facial recognition

These are the airports of Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang), Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai (Mae Fah Luang), Phuket and Hat Yai.

According to the director of the Airports Authority of Thailand, Kirati Kitmanawat, quoted by the Bangkok Post, the facial recognition system will first be put into service for domestic flights on November 1 before being extended to international flights on December 1 .

The facial recognition system speeds up security checks and facilitates boarding. By capturing an image of the passenger’s face and comparing it with their passport or ID card data, the system verifies identity without requiring physical documents.

The technology aims to reduce queues and provide a smoother experience, although privacy and data security concerns remain in a number of countries.

To use the system, passengers arriving at these airports will need to authorize access to their biometric information when checking in at the counter or self-service kiosks.

Once the passenger’s identification information and travel itinerary details are recorded, they can go from baggage drop-off to the boarding gate without having to re-present their passport or boarding pass. The procedure only concerns one trip at a time.
