This new Google Chrome feature will transform the way you get information

Unlike video or reading, the audio format allows you to consume online content while doing something else, like cooking or scrolling through your Instagram feed. And this is one of the reasons why podcasts are on the rise today. Furthermore, on its Chrome browser, Google already offers an accessibility feature which allows you to transform press articles into audio format. For example, if you read an article from Presse-citron.net on an Android smartphone, you have the choice between reading the article, or asking Chrome to read it for you. To do this, simply go to the article that interests you, then open the Google Chrome menu, and press “Listen to this page”.

Google Chrome article listening is available in the background

And thanks to an improvement that was recently made by Google, this feature has become even more practical, since it allows you to listen to news articles even when Google Chrome is in the background. No announcement has been made on this subject, but this new feature was discovered by our colleagues at 9to5Google. They explain that this improvement was made by Google on the Android version of Chrome, via the Chrome 130 update. In other words, you can now listen to a press article, put Chrome in the background, and continue listening while you use other applications on your smartphone.

An ultra practical novelty

To check if this Google Chrome improvement has already arrived on your smartphone, simply use the browser’s article listening mode (see screenshot above), and open another application. Normally, the text reading of the article should not stop when Chrome is in the background. In addition, when Google Chrome reads an article in the background, it offers an interface to control this reading in notifications, like a streaming or podcast application would do.
