This is an announcement that has once again shocked the world of video games. Yet another wave of layoffs at a major publisher. However, he assures that this procedure is necessary to be able to hire more people in the future.

Lay off to hire later?

This is an announcement that concerns one of the largest video game publishers in the world, Riot Games. Marc Merrill, one of its co-founders, recently shared crucial information regarding the future of League of Legends. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), the man posted changes aimed at ensuring that the game experience continues to improve. He is thus aiming for a bright future for at least yet “15 ans” for LoL and is justified on these dismissals.

He already explains that these layoffs are essential for the company to continue to grow while remaining sustainable. It also provides arguments to justify that certain very specific positions have been completely eliminated. “It’s about building smarter, healthier teams, not just bigger teams.” However, some information in his message may seem contradictory. In detailing his dismissal plan, he states that “the League team will end up being even bigger than it is today as we develop the next phase of League of Legends”.

A wave of layoffs in January

In the press release, no precise number of people affected was revealed. But the co-founder announced that he would help the layoffs by offering them a severance package which includes a minimum of six months of salary, an annual bonus, job placement assistance and medical coverage. According to media outlet IGN, 27 employees were affected on the League of Legends development team and five additional positions on Riot’s publishing team. However, they will have priority access to internal Riot offers in order to transfer them if possible.

This announcement echoes the major wave of layoffs that affected Riot Games almost nine months ago. In fact, the publisher had fired more than 530 people, or almost 11% of its total workforce. Its objective, “necessary” according to the company, was to cut costs after some big bets failed to pay off. The case sparked reactions on social networks because certain people, followed by a modest community, were among the names mentioned. This wave of forced departures allowed these flagship games to be “more ambitious than ever” according to Riot.
