Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 claims the multi-core performance crown, but the A18 Pro leads in single-core performance, with the Dimensity 9400 in the middle

If recent developments in the field of smartphone SoCs are anything to go by, it seems that the chip war is imminent. Apple took the lead with the launch of its A18 Pro SoC, which was followed by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 SoC earlier this month. All eyes are now on Qualcomm, which is expected to follow suit by officially unveiling its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC at the Snapdragon Summit event.

Apple Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC continues to dominate single-core performance

Benchmarks of all the aforementioned SoCs have appeared online, even for the yet-to-be-released Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, or whatever Qualcomm will call it. As you might expect, Apple leads the pack in single-core performance by a sizable margin. In Geekbench 6, the A18 Pro scores an impressive 3,400 points, while the Dimensity 9400 only gets around 2,800 points, which is a decent improvement over last year’s 9300+, but still good below Apple. Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Benchmarks Leaked Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 benchmarks reveal that the chip manages to beat the Dimensity 9400 in single-core with a score of 3,100, but still falls behind the A18 Pro in this specific test.

Snapdragon takes the multi-core crown from the Apple A18 Pro When it comes to multi-core performance, things change pretty quickly. With the lowest core count of the trio, the A18 Pro comes in dead last, with around 8,700 points in Geekbench 6. The

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 manages to cross the 10,000 point mark in early benchmark leaks, with an impressive score of 10,052. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 SoC falls between offerings from Apple and Qualcomm, scoring slightly above 9,000 points according to Geekerwan’s recent analysis.

Efficiency is not a trivial question

Of course, it’s hardly fair to rank smartphone SoCs without considering their efficiency. Apple in this regard, Microsoft’s A18 Pro hands down beats the Dimensity 9400, if Geekerwan’s numbers are to be believed. Considering the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s remarkably high multi-core scores, it’s unlikely that the chip will be particularly efficient, especially considering that Snapdragon’s previous offerings haven’t performed as well as previous offerings of Snapdragon snapdragon have lagged behind Apple in terms of processor efficiency. However, the trend could reverse this time, but I’m hesitant to take any bets at the moment.
