Microsoft confirms this strange bug in Windows 11 24H2 and explains to us why it’s actually not that annoying. A fix should be deployed soon.

Last week we reported a rather annoying bug introduced with the major 24H2 update of Windows 11. The system would steal almost 9 GB of storage space from the user without the possibility of recovering it with Windows cleaning tools.

Microsoft recognized the problem this week, however, explaining that the bug ultimately does not affect the free space on your hard drive or SSD.

Un bug d’interface

Since the deployment of Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has listed the problems encountered by users on its website. This Monday, October 14, the firm confirmed the bug in question and confirms that the storage space is in fact well cleaned by Windows.

So, when you first launch the Disk Cleanup tool, the files related to Windows updates are among the largest. The ten gigabytes are therefore freed by the tool, but do not mention it in its interface:

However, after this first run, the tool may inaccurately report space still available for cleaning (for example, 88 GB) in the “Windows Update Cleanup” category. This inaccurate amount of disk space is reported even though the space has already been freed during the initial run.

You can therefore continue to use your PC with peace of mind, knowing that your precious GB are not being held hostage by Windows 11.

Microsoft is currently working on a fix that will be available when finalized, as part of a Windows Update.
