Apple launches new iPad mini with artificial intelligence functions

Apple on Tuesday launched its next generation iPad mini with artificial intelligence features, including writing tools and an improved Siri assistant, as the iPhone maker works to equip its devices with artificial intelligence capabilities.

The new iPad mini is equipped with Apple’s A17 Pro chip, used in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. Featuring a six-core central processing unit, the A17 Pro chip is said to increase processor performance by 30% over the current generation of iPad mini and is essential for running Apple Intelligence, the intelligence software artificial from Apple.

Apple said it will roll out the first round of AI features to the US version of the English language this month through a software update with iPadOS 18.1.

These features will be available for iPads with A17 Pro or M1 chips and later generations, Apple said, adding that it will roll out other features, including image generation tools, Genmoji and capabilities powered by ChatGPT , over the coming months.

In September, Apple unveiled its long-awaited AI-powered iPhone 16 lineup, but with AI features still in testing mode, the company failed to excite some investors, while early Sales data has raised questions about demand.

Still, research firm Canalys said Monday that the iPhone 16 would help Apple’s fourth-quarter sales and provide momentum in the first half of 2025, after Apple hit a record level of shipments in the third quarter.

The iPad mini, starting at $499, is available for pre-order starting Tuesday and will begin arriving to customers and Apple stores next week, Apple said.
