Bicycle helmets under close surveillance

According to INSEE, between 2015 and 2020, more than 150,000 French people chose to give up their car and adopt the bicycle to get to their place of work or study. This development has been observed in particular in the central municipalities (central municipalities of urban areas), where bicycle use is twice as high as the rest of the territory. This use is accompanied by the use of personal protective equipment. Helmets fall into this category. They are designed to prevent skull fractures in high or low speed accidents.

But what about the more subtle brain damage caused by rotational head movements? This is the question to which numerous studies, including one1 published by a team of British researchers, tried to answer. “We found that helmets with technology, such as the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System or the WaveCel System, significantly reduce the risk of brain injuries from rotational accelerations by 30 to 40% compared to traditional helmets,” explains the research team. These rotation systems provide better protection in the event of an oblique impact, a common scenario in bicycle accidents.
