the Galaxy Z Fold 2 already abandoned by Samsung

Released in 2020, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 embodied Samsung’s ultimate know-how in the field of foldable mobiles at the time. But barely 4 years after its marketing, Samsung is already abandoning its mobile.

Software tracking has become a powerful marketing argument in recent years. Google and Samsung, for example, have committed to deploying updates for 7 years on their latest mobiles. Unfortunately, the Korean manufacturer did not see fit to extend this policy to its older high-end phones. As a result, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 which was released in 2020 at a price of 2000 and a few euros is already scrapped by the company.

As noted SamMobileSamsung has ejected the phone from its list of mobiles eligible for upcoming Android updates. Already stuck under Android 13 since 2022, Samsung’s expensive mobile will also stop receiving security updates by the end of the year. To put it another way, the phone will become obsolete software-wise and dangerous to use in terms of data security.

A dead weight for the planet

Obviously, this is not the only phone released in 2020 that was software abandoned by its manufacturer. In the Android world unfortunately, many companies don’t make the effort to keep their phones up to date for more than a few years. But the Z Fold 2 is unique in that it was sold significantly more expensive than all its competitors. With a price exceeding 2000 euros, one would have expected exemplary software support, but this is not the case.

This is therefore a difficult pill to swallow for those who broke their bank accounts a few years ago. And if Samsung now promises to do better on this point, it’s difficult not to regret this planned software obsolescence which will undoubtedly force users to change their mobile, with all the carbon footprint that this represents.

It should still be noted that the new software monitoring policies of Google and Samsung are, at least in part, dictated by European obligations rather than by the goodwill of the companies. The ecodesign regulation now forces manufacturers to offer at least 5 years of updates for mobiles marketed on the old continent. A measure whose necessity has just been further proven by this controversy surrounding the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
