This robot reduced the number of thefts in a Carrefour supermarket

For three months, a robot has been wandering the shelves of two Carrefour supermarkets in Le Havre. Called Windy, its mission is to fight against thefts. It supports security agents by going “to look in dead spots where the cameras don’t go,” explained Stéphanie Patry, director of the first Carrefour Market where the robot is present.

Windy uses his cameras to alert security guards in the event of a theft. As indicated by its inventor, Abdelkader Arab, the robot transmits live images to a PC, which are viewed by a security agent. “If there is a theft, we send the notification to the security guard,” he said.

A drop of 30%

In the second supermarket, the robot made it possible to reduce the number of thefts by 30%, with the cameras and the security agent, said its director, Laurent Martens. Concretely, when Windy alerts the security agent, the latter receives a photo of the suspected thief and waits for him at the exit of the store.

In the event that the person refuses to pay for the stolen item, the images filmed by the robot constitute “formal evidence” against them, as a security agent explains.

If Windy has made it possible to reduce the number of flights, its cost is still an obstacle. It actually represents approximately the salary of a security guard.
