Practical for travelers: Xiaomi smartphones will be able to recognize hidden cameras and protect privacy in the future

Platforms like Airbnb are very popular, and for good reasons. Travelers can use these portals to book vacation apartments or rooms in highly sought-after locations at very reasonable prices. Unfortunately, there have been reports of apartments and rooms being equipped with hidden surveillance cameras. Although Airbnb’s terms of service clearly prohibit such systems, not all owners seem to respect them. Depending on their location, hidden surveillance cameras can violate the most private aspects of a person’s life, the (secret) recording of which constitutes a criminal offense. There are several solutions to detect these cameras, and Xiaomi now intends to integrate such a function into its own operating system.

Hidden cameras can be found using a program developed by Xiaomi, which performs a scan of active WiFi devices. The goal is to detect suspicious devices, but the smartphone can’t really help locate these devices. Additionally, this feature does not necessarily detect all hidden cameras, but only those connected by WiFi. Particularly small and battery-operated surveillance cameras sometimes do not have a WiFi connection, but only a memory card, which makes detection even more difficult. One possible solution is to search for infrared radiation emitted by the hidden camera using a night vision function. It is not yet clear which devices will benefit from Xiaomi’s program, but in principle no special hardware is required.
