the end of ad blockers like uBlock Origin and AdBlock is approaching

Chrome Canary definitely rings the GOs from Manifest V2. Result: advertising blockers are now inoperative, announcing their imminent disappearance for all users of the Google browser.

AdGuard, AdBlock, uBlock: these are names that many of you know well, since they are among the most popular browser extensions. A paradigm that could well change for the undisputed leader in the sector, Google Chrome. In fact, it has been making a major change for several months by gradually abandoning Manifest V2, the set of rules which until then defined the capabilities of the extensions.

However, the successor, Manifest V3, is not supposed to allow ad blockers to work as well as before. This is a notable change for the daily lives of many Internet users, who should experience their navigation on web pages differently. However, if we were well aware of this development, we were still very happy to be able to enjoy an ad-free internet for the moment.

Understand everything about the big change that will affect Google Chrome: the transition to Manifest v3

However, the shutdown of Manifest V2 is becoming a little more concrete. As @leopova notes on X, Chrome Canary no longer allows you to launch extensions using these old rules. If this beta version of the browser had already chosen to block them by default since June 2024, an option still made it possible to bypass the restriction, if desired.

It is precisely this possibility that has just been removed, therefore definitively preventing the installation of AdBlock, uBlock and others.

An end for which we must prepare well

It is still unclear when these changes will arrive on the stable version of Chrome. For the moment, as explained Android PoliceGoogle must ensure that the permanent end of support for Manifest V2 does not cause too many problems when using its browser. Users should therefore be able to enjoy an ad-free internet for an as yet undetermined period of time.

However, you will have to prepare for the fact that Chrome, even in a stable version, will no longer authorize the use of ad blockers, which have become persona non grata for several years now. If you want to continue surfing without all these classified ads that cover your favorite websites (which include Frandroidof course ????), there will always be alternatives. At least, at first.

We can hope that alternatives to Google’s browser and using the same rendering engine, such as the excellent Brave, will continue to struggle as best they can to offer an experience with as little advertising as possible. The same goes for certain extensions, like uBlock Lite, which must somehow take up the torch from uBlock Origin in the era of Manifest V3.

However, to be able to continue using ad blockers in all their splendors, you will surely have to turn to Firefox. The navigator of the Mozilla Foundation does not use Chromium, which gives it a little more freedom to the detriment of lower performance.

A reward that will certainly be worth the cost for many users, especially since it is still possible to block advertisements on YouTube. A weighty argument.
