Users Urged to Act Quickly: Software Update Cripples Samsung Galaxy Smartphones, Threatens Loss of Data and Account Access

A number of Samsung smartphones namely Galaxy M51, Galaxy A90, Galaxy S10 Lite, S10e, S10, S10+, S10 5G, Note10, Note10+ and Note10+ 5G are affected by severe software error. The trigger appears to be a software update to the SmartThings Framework. After the update, the smartphone becomes unusable because it is stuck in a boot loop. It’s not entirely clear yet whether the issue has been fully resolved, but a refreshed version of the software update is apparently rolling out.

The consequences of the error can be serious: the smartphone can still be used after a factory reset, but all data may be deleted. There is therefore a risk of significant data loss if a backup system is not already in place, although some users have successfully restored their data. However, there is still no reliable, simple and documented method to restore data. If users are not dependent on their smartphones, it may be worth waiting for a solution. There may also be issues with two-factor authentication processes if the smartphone is used as a second factor and no backup code has been generated to restore the Google account.

A proven method to prevent the error from occurring is to simply disable automatic app updating. Owners of any of the affected smartphones are advised to leave automatic updating disabled for the time being, until Samsung makes a definitive statement on the issue.
