At its annual developers conference, Samsung revealed plans to adopt a single name for the software that powers all of its consumer products. This approach follows a similar model adopted by Huawei and Xiaomi with HarmonyOS and HyperOS respectively.

Samsung has made a series of announcements during the 2024 edition of its developer conference, and one of the main news from the Korean tech giant is that it plans to unify the software name for its entire range of consumer products.

Samsung currently uses several names to designate the software that equips its consumer products. Cell phones and tablets work with One UI, while its Galaxy smartwatches, like the Galaxy Watch FE (available on Amazon for $199), feature One UI One UI Watch technology. On the other hand, its smart televisions and refrigerators run on the Tizen OS Tizen OS. However, Samsung revealed that it plans to expand One UI beyond mobile devices, making it the software experience for all of its consumer products.

This means that the software that powers products such as its TVs, refrigerators and other smart home appliances will be called One UI. It is therefore safe to say that Samsung will put an end to the Tizen OS name, which it first unveiled in 2012. Samsung specifies that the unification will take place in 2025.

Samsung’s choice to use a single name for the software of all its products is similar to what other manufacturers are already doing. Huawei, for example, uses HarmonyOS not only for its smartphones, smartwatches and tablets, but also for its TVs, cars and IoT devices. Xiaomi also uses the name HyperOS for the software that powers its mobile devices, cars and smart home products.

However, aside from the name and likely design similarities, the underlying software is generally different from platform to platform, and this will likely be the case with One UI across multiple platforms.
