“To prevent contact with my neighbors, I sowed this plant purchased from LIDL in my garden”

The French have good relations with their neighbors… most of the time. According to a YouGov survey for the SeLoger site conducted in February 2023, two thirds of them have already been inconvenienced by their neighbors. The nuisances most often cited are noise (63%), incivility (63%) and intrusions (53%).

Fortunately, it is still possible to limit contact with individuals who do not want to hear anything. In particular, there is a plant that can help create a natural barrier with annoying neighbors. It costs almost nothing and is very easy to plant.

A climbing plant that grows quickly

Passionflower, who are you? Veronica Lorraine, garden and works specialist for the Suncompletely fell for this superb climbing plant originally from Amazonia. The journalist is even greatly grateful to her, because this very small investment protects her from the noise and curiosity of her neighbors. “I planted one early last summer. It transformed my fence. Soon enough, it wrapped itself around the trellis to form a thick sound barrier. Try to see through it! Unless sticking your face indiscreetly in the branches is impossible”she declares in the columns of the tabloid.

The big strong point of this natural and beautiful barrier: it
won’t ruin you. “I bought my eight pound plant (about nine euros, editor’s note) from Lidl last year. In no time, it covered my six meters of fence. This year it is thriving. Not only does it cover the fence , but it exceeds it”assures the expert.

Passionflower, a resistant plant that clings to everything

Moreover, passionflower will appeal to gardeners looking for peace and quiet. supporters of the least effort. According to Veronica Lorraine, “its tendrils (stems or filiform appendages, editor’s note) cling to anything nearby: wires, trellises or other plants. Even if it becomes a little stunted in winter, it continues to grow throughout the throughout the year.”

“When you buy a passion flower, make sure that it is able to withstand winter. Ideally, this plant should be planted in spring, at the end of May or beginning of June, but it is entirely possible to put it in the ground in the fall, while the ground is still warm”explains the journalist. At the start of October, which is rather cool, you can already protect the plant with a veil.

Caring for the climbing plant

“Plant it near a sunny low wall, against a fence or trellis, or on a bamboo frame if you’re starting from scratch. The passionflower develops tendrils that cling everywhere to keep it climbing. Be sure to plant in fertile, well-drained soil”she adds. Note, those who only have from a balcony or a terrace can also adopt passionflower. “You can also grow it in a pot, but it will need a lot more fertilizer and watering and won’t grow as much.”says Veronica Lorraine.

Passionflower, especially that grown in pots, is particularly greedy for water. Water at least twice a week, ensuring that the substrate only dries out slightly between two irrigations. Start slowing down the rate of watering in the fall. “Prune it in the spring by shortening the old stems. To be honest, I had to prune mine throughout the year to keep it down a bit”specifies Veronica Lorraine.
