Until now, we knew about the apocalypse clock, the climate clock or even the overshoot day, showing when we have consumed all the resources that the planet can regenerate in a year. Now, another indicator has appeared: a clock to measure progress in artificial intelligence (AI). The IMD in Lausanne announced last week the creation of this marker, called AI Safety Clock in English. It is not a marker to show the progress of AI at the economic level. The IMD instead wants to assess the risks of uncontrolled general AI, that is, autonomous systems operating without human supervision and which can cause significant damage.

What time is it now? Precisely 11:31 p.m. according to the IMD. The institute presents it as a symbolic representation of the proximity of a critical tipping point where uncontrolled general AI could pose a significant threat. “While no major damage has yet occurred, the rapid pace of AI development and regulatory challenges require constant vigilance from all stakeholders,” warns the IMD.
