With the iPhone 16, Apple is introducing a new button called “Camera Control”. This new key, present on all iPhones in the range, allows quick access to key camera features, such as zoom settings.
Unfortunately, this new button would victim of a malfunction. As our colleagues from Tom’s Guide report, many users are complaining about a bug caused by using the new key. According to some users, the camera tends to crash, and display a black screen, when the Camera Control button is activated from the lock screen. This is what an iPhone 16 Pro Max user claims on Apple’s support forum.

Camera displays black screen
Still on the Apple forum, another buyer claims that “using the camera control to wake the phone and take a photo (either using the camera control or using the touchscreen button) crashes the camera app ».
On Reddit, you can easily find similar testimonials. The problems started when the smartphones were received on September 20. In some cases, the camera app crashes as soon as it is opened, whether through the physical button on the edge or a digital shortcut.
“No matter if I open from the lock screen, app or camera button, it crashes,” regrets a user on Reddit.
Apparently restarting the phone temporarily fixes the bug. According to testimonies, the dysfunction nevertheless returns episodically. It’s obviously very annoying to have to turn off and restart the smartphone in the middle of the day.
“Mine works after turning the phone off and on again, but the next day it crashes!” “, complains an Internet user.
This malfunction seems confined to the iPhone 16 Pro, the two highest-end versions of the generation. In fact, the vast majority of complaints come from people who opted for an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the edition built around a 6.9-inch OLED display. This is a fairly limited phenomenon. Not all iPhone 16 Pros suffer from the same problem.
A software bug
On the other hand, we noticed a similar problem on our iPhone 15 Pro Max which is running the latest version of iOS 18. Sometimes, the camera displays a black screen when opening. It is therefore possible that the bug is not linked to the “Camera control” button. Unless there is a surprise, it isa software bug. De facto, Apple should not delay in isolating the fault and deploying a fix via an iOS update. At the moment, the Cupertino giant has not yet officially communicated about this problem, although the company is apparently aware of it. An Internet user indicates that he has “Troubleshooting this issue with Apple Support over the last few days and getting the info back to the engineers.”
This is the second bug identified on the iPhone 16 since their release on the market. A few days ago, we reported that many users had noticed that the touch screen of their iPhone was suffering from a bug. Sometimes taps and swipes of the screen are not recognized by the interface. Reports suggest that this is a failure of the accidental keystroke rejection algorithm in iOS. Here again, the possibility of a purely software bug is favored. Everything should be back to normal with an iOS update.
