PlayStation wants to use artificial intelligence to speed up game development

In a new Sony company report, the Japanese giant revealed that PlayStation will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to speed up the development of its games, attempting to contain costs.

“Sony is strengthening technologies that can help creators strive to maximize the value of their intellectual property in an efficient, high-quality manner, such as detection and capture, as well as real-time 3D processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Together, these technologies will help distribute our intellectual property quickly and cost-effectively to a wider range of fans. »

This report also details that PlayStation used machine learning in the production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with Insomniac Games using voice recognition software in some languages. This process allowed the company to automatically sync subtitles with each character’s lines, “significantly shortening the subtitling process.” As if all that wasn’t enough, Sony revealed that it is building its volumetric capture studio, so it can generate 3D data from people and places to render high-quality images:

“In the future, we plan to apply high-quality 3D assets, including motion data from our studio, accumulated by each of our companies across the Group, while also exploring potential external sales. In real-time 3D processing, we are carrying out exploratory activities with Epic Games, centered on the Unreal Engine, developed as a physics engine to generate game CGs. For example, we reused 3DCG components from a music video shot in virtual production to produce a game set in the same world, releasing a CG-based proof-of-concept short film using Unreal Engine.

At this point, we will see in the future what changes will be brought by the use of artificial intelligence in the development of PlayStation games.
