This technology finally arrives on Android smartphones

Thought magnetic charging was just for iPhone owners? Oppo and Vivo are preparing to add this technology to their smartphones.

Remember, a little over a year ago, we were told about the Qi2 standard. For many, this name didn’t mean much, and yet it will change the way we charge our smartphones. Today, this long-awaited technology is finally coming to Android devices.

Qi2: magnetic wireless charging

But what exactly is Qi2? Simply put, it’s version 2.0 of the wireless charging standard you’re probably already using. The big news? It doubles the charging power, to 15 Watts, and above all, it integrates magnets, like Apple’s MagSafe. No more hassle to perfectly align your phone on the charger.

Oppo and Vivo step up to the plate

If it took a while to arrive on Android, it’s now done. And who says new technology, says new players on the field. Oppo and Vivo, two Chinese smartphone giants, are preparing for its arrival.

Manage my choices

In a demonstration video posted on Weibo (China’s Facebook), Zhou Yibao, the product manager at Oppo, showed that their new wireless charging accessory for the Find X8 series is compatible with iPhones. Translation: it works with MagSafe and most likely with Qi2 (even if the latter point is not yet officially confirmed).

Wireless smartphone charging will increase to 50 watts, but it won’t be easy

Where the Qi2 standard officially provides for a magnetic charge of 15 watts, Oppo pushes the charging power up to… 50 watts! This is twice as fast as what Apple offers for its iPhone 16 (25 watts). And the best part of all this? It’s backwards compatible. Your old smartphone will still be able to charge, but slower.

Oppo does not intend to stop with traditional chargers. The brand plans to release a whole range of accessories: powerbanks, desktop chargers, car chargers, and even protective cases with magnetic functions. The MagSafe ecosystem will no longer be alone.

Meanwhile, Vivo is not far behind. Its X200 trio is also making waves in the Chinese tech press. If Oppo is still playing the mystery card by hiding the back of its Find X8, Vivo has already revealed the design of its X200, including its new Zeiss camera.

The battle is therefore not only in the field of wireless charging, but also in that of photography.

In any case, it’s good to see Android manufacturers adopting Qi2 fully, with all the features offered.
