say goodbye to wired listening on the new model

Apple has just launched a new version of its AirPods Max equipped with a USB-C port and benefiting from new colors. However, this update is causing serious controversy because it removes the ability to use the headset in wired mode, a feature that was present on the previous model.

After equipping its iPhone 15 then iPhone 16 and AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C ports, Apple is logically continuing its transition by equipping its AirPods Max with this universal connection. If this change was expected and requested by many users, its integration ultimately proved disappointing – in addition to the fact that the brand ultimately made no changes to the internal components or the design of the headset.

Indeed, unlike the Lightning model that it replaces, this new high-end headset no longer allows listening in wired mode via its USB-C port, whether with a Mac, an iPhone or other devices.

This most surprising limitation deprives the user of a functionality that is nevertheless basic and appreciated on a headset of this level and this price. It was previously possible to connect AirPods Max to an audio source via a Lightning to 3.5mm mini-jack cable (sold separately by Apple). This option was particularly useful for enjoying optimal audio quality without latency, or simply when the battery was exhausted.

The idea, to overcome this, would be to use a USB-C to jack adapter, but it seems that the models currently on the market do not work. It is rumored that Apple could offer a proprietary adapter, again, sold separately.

A questionable technical choice

Apple has not officially communicated the reasons for this deletion. Some observers hypothesize technical constraints linked to the integration of the USB-C port. Others see it as a deliberate desire to push users towards exclusively wireless use, aligned with the brand’s overall strategy.

Whatever the reason, this choice appears to be a step backwards. In a very competitive high-end headset market, where versatility is often emphasized, in addition to the fact that there is absolutely no improvement in sound, this limitation could harm the attractiveness of AirPods Max in the face of competitors offering more connectivity options like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or the Sonos Ace, for example.

An unchanged price despite reduced functionality and questions for the future

Despite this functional regression, Apple maintains the high price of 579 euros for its AirPods Max USB-C. This pricing positioning, already considered aggressive when the original model was launched in 2020, becomes even more difficult to justify with the loss of wired functionality.

Apple’s handling of this update also raises questions. The brand did not clearly communicate about the removal of wired functionality during the product launch. It would have been a bad idea for the company to say: “by the way, this new headset is the best we’ve ever made, but we’ve removed a very practical feature…”. Fatally, this led to disappointment with some buyers discovering the limitation after purchase.

This situation is reminiscent of other recent controversies surrounding Apple’s technical choices, such as limiting fast charging capabilities on some iPhone 15s via third-party USB-C cables.

This controversial AirPods Max update raises questions about the future of the line. Some analysts are speculating about the possibility of an upcoming “Pro” version, which could reintroduce wired connectivity and other advanced features to justify premium positioning.

Others question Apple’s overall strategy regarding its audio accessories. The firm seems to be increasingly favoring wireless technologies, as evidenced by the development of its proprietary H2 chipset present on the AirPods 4 and AirPods 2 Pro. This direction could ultimately herald the gradual disappearance of wired options across its entire range.
