Cégep de Sorel-Tracy – Launch of a multidisciplinary student research team in electrical engineering at LabIDEA at Cégep de Sorel-Tracy

Very recently, a team of 12 students from the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Technology programs was formed at LabIDEA at Cégep de Sorel-Tracy. Accompanied by teacher Philippe Blanchard and Mr. Roger Bergeron, a retired researcher from the Hydro-Québec Research Institute (IREQ), still active in the field, the team was offered a very rewarding mission: to push the multidisciplinary boundaries of electrical engineering.

“Having fallen in love with applied research” is the passion that Philippe Blanchard, a teacher in Electrical Engineering Technology and a doctoral student in the same discipline, and his colleague Roger Bergeron, want to share.

More specifically, Philippe Blanchard will lead training workshops for these 12 recruits aimed at enriching their academic backgrounds. The objective of these workshops is to develop skills that will respond to the applied research project on power quality in electrical networks, in particular the development of a specialized measuring device right here at the innovation laboratory, LabIDEA at Cégep de Sorel-Tracy.

Let us recall that the measurement of the quality of the wave in the electrical networks is undermined by recent technologies such as electric car chargers, microgrids made up of wind farms and solar panels as well as regenerative speed variators. One challenge of the research is to have a device capable of measuring over long periods the high-frequency disturbances caused by this equipment, which is what the team will do.
