Trump assassination attempt on Florida golf course: Suspect left letter claiming responsibility

He claims to have “done (his) best.” The suspect in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on a Florida golf course on September 15 left a letter indicating that he intended to kill the former American president, according to documents made public Monday by the prosecution.

The letter was discovered in a box left several months ago at the home of an unnamed person. That person didn’t open the box until after the suspect, Ryan Routh, was arrested. It was she who alerted authorities.

“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed. I did my best and showed all the courage I could muster. Now it’s up to you to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whoever succeeds,” reads the letter, which appears to have been written on the assumption that the attempt was doomed to failure. The box also contained ammunition, phones and miscellaneous items.

A hearing this Monday

In other evidence, also released Monday, investigators found in the suspect’s vehicle “a handwritten list of dates in August, September and October 2024 and locations where the former president had appeared or was supposed to be present,” The Associated Press reported. The new disclosures came ahead of a hearing Monday on Routh’s continued detention.

The latter, aged 58, was arrested on September 15 in Florida. He is suspected of having tried to shoot Donald Trump with a scoped assault rifle, from a bush on the edge of his golf course.

Brought before a judge in Florida, he was charged on September 16 with illegal possession of a weapon, due to his criminal record, and possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial number. Charges carrying maximum sentences of 15 years and five years in prison, respectively. However, he is expected to face further prosecution.
