An enthusiast has adapted the TI-84 graphing calculator to work with ChatGPT and Internet access.

Recently, a hacker under the pseudonym ChromaLock posted a YouTube video showing how he modified a Texas Instruments TI-84 graphing calculator to connect to the internet and use ChatGPT.

What we know

The video, titled “I Built the Perfect Cheat Device,” shows how, using a special board and an ESP32-C3 microcontroller, the calculator accesses Wi-Fi and can send queries to ChatGPT. Users can enter tasks on the calculator and receive answers in real time.

ChromaLock developed its own software and hardware for this modification, which is publicly available on GitHub. In addition to the ChatGPT interface, the device also includes game downloads and other cheat tools such as image viewers and text cheat sheets disguised as software source code.

The hacker claims that his device can bypass anti-cheat measures such as checking or clearing the calculator’s memory before a test. However, using ChatGPT during an exam could be considered an ethical violation and/or a form of academic dishonesty, leading to serious repercussions in educational institutions.
