For those who haven’t been following, 24H2 is the official numbering designating the major annual update of 2024 of the Windows 11 operating system. It has already been pre-installed since July on recent Copilot+ PCs, and has been accessible for a little longer for testers via the Windows Insiders program. The vast majority of users, however, still have to wait. Not for much longer, however, since Microsoft has revealed specific dates for the final online release.
A gradual deployment for Windows 11 24H2
Rather than issuing a clear announcement (for now), Microsoft casually dropped the information into a blog post dedicated to improved data protection in Copilot.

A paragraph thus indicates that “The move to Microsoft 365 Apps as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot will align with the annual Windows 11 feature update release. The changes will roll out to managed PCs starting with the optional non-security preview release on September 24, 2024, and then with the monthly security update release on October 8 for all supported versions of Windows 11. These changes will roll out to Windows 10 PCs the following month.”
Concretely, starting next week, those in a hurry with a compatible PC will be able to install the 24H2 update by searching for it manually in Windows Update. It will be indicated as an optional preview update, like the previous ones for those who have already checked the box Receive the latest updates as soon as they are available in the settings. Otherwise, it will be offered gradually in Windows Update starting October 8, the deployment date of the monthly security update.
The boost Windows 11 needs to succeed?
If you wait for the automatic deployment via Windows Update, as with previous major updates, it is not impossible that you will only be served in several weeks or even months. You may therefore have to be patient to benefit from the improvements of the 24H2 update.
Let’s remember in particular that there will be improvements for existing elements (more practical taskbar and Start menu, richer lock screen, exploration of Android terminals from the file explorer, reorganized settings, fewer restarts for future updates, etc.), as well as some new features (Copilot, AI to improve audio and video calls, support for wifi 7 and USB 4, new energy saving mode, etc.).
