As big as a Galaxy S24+, cheaper, but (much) less powerful, the Galaxy A16 is coming

Samsung’s upcoming entry-level smartphone, the Galaxy A16 5G, will soon be unveiled in India and some of its specifications have been leaked.

Released last April, the Galaxy A15 was able to correct some of the errors of its predecessor, notably with the appearance of a very well-calibrated 90 Hz Oled screen.

A smartphone as big as a Galaxy S24+

And according to the images published by thetechoutlook, Samsung would stay on the same line. This display keeps the same properties, but goes from 6.5 to 6.7 inches. Unfortunately, it will still have to make do with a big black border, Samsung choosing instead to increase the measurements of its phone to accommodate its larger screen: 164.4 x 77.9 mm.

Note that Samsung would have refined its chassis with a thickness of 7.9 mm. The weight would be 192 g or 200 g depending on the embedded chip. It would also gain IP54 certification.

The back of the device would be in “Glasstic”, a nice metaphor to talk about a back in shiny plastic, glass effect, but without being glass.

Let’s remember that we are dealing with a smartphone that should cost around 200 euros.

Samsung would make its mid-range smartphones sweat a little on this Galaxy A16 5G. It would thus inherit the button island of the Galaxy A55 and A35. A touch of design that brings a little singularity. On the other hand, with all due respect to music lovers, it would be necessary to do without the 3.5 mm jack which would bow out on this range.

Three finishes would be on the program: green, black and gold.

Performances in question

In terms of performance, the Galaxy A16 5G is expected to deliver. The A14 and then the A15 were lacking in this area, not fully ensuring daily tasks without flinching.

Here, Samsung would switch to Mediatek’s Dimensity 6300 on its A16 5G, a 6nm SoC that we have not yet had the pleasure of coming across. It should be more powerful than the 6100 that we tested on the TCL 50 5G and which already did the job.

Be careful, another variant would coexist in Exynos 1330, a chip that equipped the Samsung Galaxy M14 5G (even more entry-level)… in 2023. Fingers crossed.

An ever-longer update policy

And while we don’t know the data on the photo and battery life sections, we believe that Samsung has made a good decision regarding the support of its entry-level smartphones, going from 4 years of major updates to 6 years, and this also for security updates.
