For its 9th edition, the First Lego League organized at Ciney Expo welcomed 35 teams of young people aged 9 to 16.

Around a games table, teams of young people from all over Wallonia compete with the Lego brick robots that they made in class. This is the principle of the First Lego League, a competition organized each year at Ciney Expo. Boris Roland is in charge of communications for Technobel, which organizes the event.

For the students, it is the culmination of several months of training, since they received the tests in September. A few months later, it’s time to defend the creation of their robot and innovative solutions on the theme of the oceans in front of a jury.

But the Make It 2025 show isn’t just about the Lego League. There are also exhibitors and activities around the theme of the marine world, such as a workshop for manufacturing Lego bricks made from recycled plastics or a virtual reality headset from the Liège Aquarium.

“Hexagonia”, an educational video game

This year, Technobel is also taking advantage of the Make It show to present its Hexagonia project to the general public. A video game created thanks to the Wallonia Recovery Plan which can be used by teachers in class, explains Catherine Quewet. She works for Technobel.

You can play it from the 5th or 6th primary school. In this video game, students will have to collaborate and plan to successfully complete a set of missions, which use STEAM skills (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics).

Growing success

This show dedicated to technologies and robotics grows a little bigger each year, thanks to the success of the Lego League, notes Boris Roland. For this 9th edition, 35 teams were registered in the First Lego League category, which is aimed at 9-16 year olds, and around ten teams in the 6-9 year old category.

It is a competition that grows from year to year, even in terms of visitors. And then, we are already in the 9th edition, which means that the participants of the 1st edition are starting to graduate from higher education with engineering or computer science backgrounds. So our objective, which is to encourage vocations for new technologies and digital professions, is completely accomplished.

This year again, MaTélé brought you the Make It event from the inside with a live broadcast from Ciney Expo, to watch again on our Facebook page.
