Wi-Fi 7 is the latest generation of Wi-Fi. With it, its share of improvements: a theoretical throughput up to 46 Gb/sas well asSignificantly improved responsiveness and reliability.
Wi-Fi 7: already present on several Freebox offers
At the start of 2024, Free took advantage of the launch of the Wi-Fi 7 standard to get a head start on its competitors. Indeed, even as the latest generation of Wi-Fi was trickling into new devices, smartphones, tablets and other computers, the operator took the opportunity to launch the first Wi-Fi 7 box on the market: the new Freebox Ultra.
But Free did not stop there: it also took the opportunity to boost another Freebox offer with Wi-Fi 7: la Freebox Pop.
Result: Free still remains to this day the only operator to offer Internet subscriptions compatible with the latest generation of Wi-Fi.
But that won't be the case for much longer. Because a new operator is preparing to offer Wi-Fi 7.
Bouygues Telecom will meet on January 16
In a few days, a second operator will offer Wi-Fi 7. In fact, Bouygues Telecom is meeting on January 16 to present its new Bbox Wi-Fi 7 and compete Free.
We just know that the new Bbox has 3 Ethernet sockets, including one compatible with 10 Gb/s, which suggests a theoretical connection speed with fiber of at least 8 Gb/s for download and, hopefully, in sending files. To do as well as the new Freebox Ultra.
In terms of design, the new modem is equipped with a touch screen. And for better propagation of the Wi-Fi signal, it is also designed to be positioned vertically.
On the other hand, what we do not know is what the place of this new Bbox Wi-Fi 7 in the range of Bouygues Telecom internet offers. Will the operator launch a new offer? Or will this new modem be available with Bbox ultym, the operator's premium subscription? Response January 16.
And among other operators?
Already present at Free and soon at Bouygues Telecom, Wi-Fi 7 could also appear at Orange and SFR during the year 2025. But nothing official.
In fact, the two operators have not yet officially communicated on the subject. However, as we revealed to you in an article dated June 24, 2024, Wi-Fi 7 could very soon be relevant at SFR! Indeed, the Altice laboratoryAltice Labs, located in Portugal, working on cutting-edge equipment. Among them, un modem XGS-PON compatible Wi-Fi 7. Altice being the parent company to which SFR belongs, it would therefore be logical for the French operator to offer it to its SFR box customers.
And at Orange, it also seems to be in the pipeline. Indeed, as our partner Ariase writes in an article published on October 7, 2024, a new Livebox 7 with Wi-Fi has appeared in Spain. It is therefore a certainty that this revolutionary technology will also appear on Livebox offers in France. It remains to be seen when.
What is certain is that Wi-Fi will drive the internet box market in 2025.
