Sony seems to want to rekindle the flame of forgotten franchises. As the PlayStation 5 continues to dominate the market, rumors are circulating about the return of small, inactive licenses to enrich the release schedule in 2025.
Andy Robinson, renowned journalist at Video Games Chroniclelaunched this information during the latest VGC podcast. According to him, PlayStation is preparing “one or two minor franchise relaunches”. If no precise title has been revealed, Robinson insists on the ” depth “ of these games, which would complement the blockbusters already planned.
The context gives weight to these speculations. The closure of Japan Studio caused an outcry on social networks, where many fans expressed their sadness at the sidelining of treasures such as Gravity Rush. These titles, although less known, still have their audience.
PlayStation could thus follow the example of Capcom, which is experiencing real success by reactivating its dormant licenses. The idea of tapping into this untapped potential makes perfect sense, especially at a time when competition between platforms is intensifying.
Sony’s calendar for 2025 already promises to be busy with flagship titles like Ghost of Yotei et Death Stranding 2. Other highly anticipated games, like Marvel’s Wolverineremain without a precise date. Still, fans are hoping these relaunches could add a welcome dose of nostalgia to this list.
Like Nintendo which sometimes resurrects its old licenses on Switch, Sony seems to want to diversify its catalog. These franchises “minor”far from being insignificant, could become perfect complements to the AAAs already in development.
For now, it’s all speculation. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, has not confirmed these rumors. But if they turn out to be true, they could delight players who are waiting to see forgotten nuggets on their PS5.
