Google has announced support for a new feature for its Google Wallet service. Now, watches and smartphones can be used to unlock certain smart locks.
Google Wallet has never succeeded in attracting French banks. With the exception of certain neobanks, such as Revolut, N26 or Fortuneo, few traditional banks allow the use of Google’s contactless payment service. Small exceptions, we will still note compatibility with Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Épargne.

Regardless, Google has finally developed other uses for its contactless payment service… other than contactless payment. It must be said that Google Wallet is above all an NFC key wallet which can therefore be used with all services using this contactless technology.
This is obviously the case for connected locks and it is precisely in this area that Google has partnered with the American company Allegion. This is a group responsible for the security and surveillance of university residences, offices or homes. Among its different brands, we can cite the connected lock manufacturer Schlage.
In a press release released earlier this month, Allegion indicates that Schlage locks are now compatible with Wear OS smartwatches:
Starting December 9, 2024, all Schlage mobile credits currently offered in Google Wallet on Android, such as student IDs or employee badges, will be offered on Wear OS watches for added convenience, security and simplicity.
Concretely, since December 9, all students or employees with access to their key connected to Google Wallet on their phone will also be able to benefit from it from a connected watch. Enough to allow faster unlocking, simply with a flick of the wrist, without having to take the phone out of your pocket and without fear of having left it inside.
