ChatGPT has just gained a new function: folders

For day 7 of its advent calendar, OpenAI announces the possibility of creating “projects” in ChatGPT. These are folders to bring together conversations on the same theme, with common files and instructions.

After a Santa Claus mode on December 12, OpenAI presents a much more pragmatic functionality on December 13: a conversation organizer arrives in ChatGPT.

The company, which has five surprises left in its Advent calendar of announcements, is banking on this feature to make ChatGPT less ephemeral, with discussions that can be pinned to its home page.

With “Projects”, ChatGPT will make it easier to return to old conversations

Previously, ChatGPT sorted conversations chronologically. The most recent discussions appeared at the top, the oldest were at the bottom. If you were looking for a conversation dated several days ago, to find information on a trip or to relaunch the chatbot on an insurance problem for example, you had to proceed manually (there is also a search tool, but it is not always precise).

Starting December 13, ChatGPT users can create folders. You can, for example, organize your conversations according to themes, such as “Travel”, “Work”, “Interviews” or “Home”. Each folder can accommodate several conversations and remains permanently accessible from the home page.

In addition to making sorting easier, “projects” have another advantage: they allow knowledge to be shared between several conversations. Two things are possible with the first version:

  • A project can have its own files, which are accessible in all discussions (plane tickets or a hotel reservation, for example).
  • A project can have a shared instruction, in order to give context to ChatGPT. Example: details about your travel plan and the people accompanying you. In each pinned conversation, the chatbot will then respond in a personalized way.

The “ChatGPT Projects” feature has been rolling out since December 13. It should be available to all ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro and ChatGPT Enterprise users the same day. Free users will also have it, but at a later date.
