There aren’t many PS3 emulators on the market, and of those available, RPCS3 is considered the best by many. The developers of the emulator have just announced, at , the availability of the application port for ARM-based Windows, MacOS and Linux of the application port for ARM-based Windows, MacOS and Linux devices .
This expands the compatibility of the PS3 emulator, which was previously only available for x64 systems. Support for ARM devices naturally means that an iOS or Android port is close to happening, but the developers claim otherwise. During the announcement, the team indicated that they have no plans to port the app to mobile at this time.
If you’re wondering why, know that there are two reasons preventing developers from moving forward with smartphone ports. The RPCS3 developer cites community issues that other Android emulators have faced. Take the AetherSX2 Emulator PS2 Emulator, for example. The sole developer behind this project had to shut it down due to “death threats” received from “toxic users”
Then there are people who redistribute modified versions of emulators ignoring open-source licenses. RPCS3 developers have spoken about Google’s ineffectiveness in dealing with these modified versions that disguise themselves as emulators but are actually malware.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that RPCS3 developers are taking Android and iOS ports off the table completely. However, at this stage, it seems that these mobile ports are not going to happen right away, which is unfortunate. Newly released high-end phones are more than capable of emulating PS3 games. In fact, the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite phones are even making headlines for their ability to emulate modern AAA games using PC emulators.
