The year 2025 will be the international year of glacier preservation. The opportunity for the JDE to be concerned about the state of glaciers on our planet. This is the file for the month of January and we present to you the program here!

Did you know that by 2100, half of the glaciers on our planet will have disappeared? The cause: global warming! In its January file, the JDE decided to focus on the state of glaciers on Earth.

Disappearing glaciers, is it serious? Well yes! It is mountain glaciers, for example, which provide water to millions of inhabitants. The melting of certain glaciers is causing sea levels to rise… Moreover, in this file, we are offering you a great experience to help you see it!

To cope, and understand, we must study these glaciers. In this file, we tell you about Lisa Ardouin, researcher at the Free University of Brussels. Right now she is in Antarctica. There, his team drills deep into the ice to extract cores, a sort of large cylinder, of ice.

And you will see, these cores reveal secrets and are extremely valuable for understanding the causes and consequences of rising temperatures.

An impact on global warming

Franck Pattyn is a glaciologist. He is a glacier specialist. He has already visited Antarctica 13 times. He analyzes the effect of climate change on glaciers.

By talking with him, we learned that the melting of the ice also had an impact on global warming itself! If the ice melts, the Earth absorbs more heat. We explain all this to you in our file.

What is the impact of melting glaciers on animals? And about the nearby villages? What can we do to slow down this melting? And what are the differences between Arctic and Antarctica?

We answer all these questions in our special report “2025, year of glaciers” which will appear in your JDE on January 2.

As a teacher, you can work on this theme in class thanks to our educational activities. For more information, go to www.lejde.be.
