If the iPhone 16s have been, once again, acclaimed for the quality of their designs and finishes, the same cannot be said for their finesse. While some manufacturers manage to go below 7 mm, such as the Honor 200 Lite with its 6.8 mm or the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with its 6.9 mm, the iPhone 16 for its part measures 7.8 mm.
In 2024, Apple has however proven its ability to significantly flatten a high-end device with its iPad Pro (2024) measuring 5.3 and 5.1 mm for the 11 and 13 inches. The brand even came close to being in bad taste by emphasizing a little too much on finesse in its advertising, but that’s another story.
2mm less
In recent weeks, rumors of an iPhone 17 Air have been rife, telling anyone who will listen that Apple would release the “thinnest iPhone ever” in 2025. For reference, this record is currently held by the iPhone 6 with 6.9 mm.
In his weekly newsletter, the journalist from Bloomberg Mark Gurman brings a little clarification to all of this. He assures that the iPhone 17 Air would gain 2 mm less thickness compared to the iPhone 16 Pro. The latter measuring 8.25 mm, this would mean that we would expect 6.25 mm. This seems excessively thin. Apart from folding smartphones in the unfolded position, which reach thicknesses like 4.4 mm for the Honor Magic V3, no one can come close to it.
Many brands like Honor have managed to reduce the thickness of their devices thanks to a very specific technology: Silicon-Carbon batteries. These are batteries capable of storing more energy in the same space. They are said to offer greater energy density.
However, iPhones are rather known for having small batteries compared to those of the competition, with the Apple smartphone catching up on system optimization. This is therefore a good avenue for a thinner iPhone. This is just speculation on our part, but as the industry stands, this is the simplest way to offer a thinner device.
What to expect from the iPhone 17 Air?
According to previous rumors, the iPhone 17 Air, in addition to being very thin, could be light… on its technical sheet. It could in fact only have one photo module. Exit the ultra-wide-angle then?

Be careful, however, not to confuse it with an iPhone 13 mini: the iPhone 17 Air would include a screen of a very suitable size, since it would be 6.6 inches. It would also integrate Apple’s latest A19 chip, but not necessarily its Pro version.
