Google is ending the year in style with a major update to its Pixels. On the menu: Gemini is everywhere, the camera gains in functionality and security is strengthened. This is the Pixel Drop of December.
It's not a major Android update, Android 16 will wait a bit, but it's the last Pixel Drop from December 2024. Basically: an update dedicated to Pixels with some new features.
First, Google's smart assistant is getting some important new features, including the ability to interact with more system apps.
Specifically, Gemini can now make calls, send text messages, manage your timers and even control the camera. This update is available for all Pixels starting with Pixel 6.
The functionality put forward by Google, called “ Information recorded“, allows Gemini to remember your preferences for more personalized responses.
For example, if you indicate that you follow a particular diet, Gemini will automatically remember this to adapt its future suggestions.
Google also announces the integration of Gemini in call screening. There is even the possibility of seeing the live transcription of conversations between the caller and the AI, even if this functionality remains limited for the moment to certain Pixels and certain regions of the world.
Camera and screenshots get a makeover
Photography, the historical strong point of Pixels, is also one of the new features.
Note, for example, the arrival of dual-screen portrait mode on the Pixel Fold.
Native integration with Instagram for Ultra HDR photos is also welcome, even if it arrives late compared to the Apple and Samsung competition.
Screenshots are undergoing a small revolution with intelligent automatic organization and advanced integration with Google Wallet.
Google also mentions the addition of the “ Circle to Search » directly in the Screenshots app. However, some of these features remain confined to the Pixel 9.
Improved security and accessibility
Google introduces “ Identity Check » in beta version, a security feature that requires biometric authentication (facial recognition or fingerprint) during sensitive changes if you are in a new location. This measure, available on Pixel 6 and later versions, should significantly strengthen device security.
Accessibility is also part of the changes, with “Simple View”, which optimizes the display by increasing font size and touch sensitivity.
Moreover, users of Now Playing will now benefit from displaying album art in history.
We will not be entitled to all the functionalities
It is important to note that not all features are immediately available on the French market.
While French users can enjoy Ultra HDR photos on Instagram (Pixel 9) and the new Snapchat photo selector (Pixel 6 and later), certain features remain limited. Gemini-related innovations, including extensions and saved information, are currently reserved for English-speaking users.
Built-in VPN now extends to the Pixel Tablet, while Clear Voice mode in the Recorder app is exclusive to the Pixel 9.
The December Pixel Drop, along with new Android features, begins rolling out on December 5 (today).
